A freshly graduated police officer who was stabbed in the neck has managed to chase down a suspect and deploy his Taser after an early morning callout.
Two police officers arrived at a domestic disturbance between a father and a son at Hemmant in Brisbane’s east at dawn on Sunday.
While officers tried to diffuse the situation a 35-year-old man allegedly stabbed the new constable in the neck twice and assaulted his partner — a senior constable — before fleeing.
But the injured police officer aged in his 40s, who had only graduated from the police academy in July, gave chase with blood gushing out of his neck.
Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior said the officer was “an absolute hero” for his actions.
“Whilst holding onto his neck to stop the bleeding, he managed to chase after the offender, deploy a Taser but only had to stop because he was getting weary from the blood loss,” he told reporters in Brisbane on Sunday.
He was given first aid before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Prior also said the other police officer was “slashed across the forehead” with a knife.
Police later arrested the 35-year-old man outside a business about 7am and charged him with two counts of attempted murder.
Acting Superintendent Heath McQueen praised the “commitment and courage” of the officers and the “split second decisions” they made in a fluid situation.
“This incident highlights the inherent risk that our officers face on a daily basis in serving the community,” he said.
He said the constable would undergo surgery for injuries.
