Yes. Reading the site is free, with no advertising. Without an account you can read a set number of articles a day; a free account removes the limit.

Where we may publish an article in full, we shorten it to its most important sentences, in plainer words. The original is always one link away.

Some outlets do not permit their articles to be republished, even rewritten. For those we show a short summary and link to the original.

Never. Words inside quotation marks are exactly as the outlet published them.

Outlets edit stories after they go out, usually without saying so. Where we saw a story before and after, the article shows the headline as it was first filed, and how much of the report changed.

They come from the outlet’s own labelling of the piece, in the address or the headline. Anything not labelled is treated as a report: we never decide a story is an opinion piece from its score.

Local, then your town, or type your postcode. Nothing about your location is stored, and the page works without giving the browser permission to locate you.

The figures, names and quoted words in the outlet’s headline, looked for in the outlet’s own report. The page says how many could be checked, how many were found, and which were not. Where the headline carries none of those there is nothing to check, and the page says that instead of showing a tick. It runs only where we hold the full report, so it is not on summary-only stories.

Yes. It holds the last day’s stories and stops, and says so at the bottom. Nothing loads below that line.

Open Filters and use Not today. It folds the subject the outlets filed the story under, rather than a word in the headline, and it never folds anything quietly: what it took out is counted on the page with a button to show it again.

In your browser, and nowhere else. They are never sent to us, they do not need an account, and they do not follow you to another device. Clearing your browser data clears them.

One number from 0 to 100 for how far an article is from a plain report. It combines every indicator, with judgement words weighted most. 0 is mundane.

No. The indicators measure how an article is written, not whether it is correct.

Happiness reads how heavy a story is to read. A plain report of a death is heavy; the same story written up with sensational wording is heavier still.

Yes, in up to three browsers at a time: say a work computer, a home one, and Chrome beside Safari. It is for one person. Connecting another disconnects the one used least recently, and Settings lists them all.

Settings, then Browser extension, then Manage or cancel. It stays active until the end of the period you paid for.

Settings, then Delete account. Your email, preferences and sign-in records are removed.

No. Text sent for scoring is processed and discarded; we record only the call, the product and the word count for billing.
