Police have launched an investigation into the death of an eight-month-old baby in Victoria.

Officers say they were called to a Leith Street home in Redan, an inner suburb of Ballarat, on Sunday and found a baby girl unresponsive.

Emergency services performed CPR and moved her to Ballarat Hospital just after 1pm.

She was transferred to a Melbourne hospital but passed away on Tuesday.

A 23-year-old man was interviewed by police but has been released “pending further enquiries”, officers said in a statement.

“The exact circumstances are yet to be determined and detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate,” police said.
