A Toyota 4WD and a Mitsubishi station wagon collided head-on on the Augusta Hwy at Crystal Brook about 10.20am on Wednesday.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 68-year-old woman from Crystal Brook, was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital, where she later died.

The driver of the Toyota, a 51-year-old man from Victoria, and his two passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were also taken to hospital for treatment.

Major Crash investigators closed the Augusta Hwy closed for several hours for forensic examinations, before reopening it about 9pm.

The Victorian man was later arrested and charged with causing death by careless driving.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Port Pirie Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The woman’s death is the 81st life lost on South Australian roads this year.
