Nineteen people have been assessed by paramedics after a planned hazard reduction burn escaped containment lines in Sydney’s southwest.
The incident unfolded on Katanna Road in Wedderburn, near Campbelltown, on Saturday afternoon, when winds picked up around 4pm and the fire quickly grew out of control.
One fire truck was destroyed, and it is believed two others were seriously damaged as the flames overran the vehicles.
Paramedics assessed up to 19 people at the scene, with one person treated for smoke inhalation.
None of those assessed were taken to hospital.
The fire came close to several nearby properties but was contained before it became a threat to homes.
The Rural Fire Service commissioner is heading to the scene, with crews remaining in the area to monitor the burn.
With El Niño expected to bring hotter, drier conditions and heightened bushfire risk this summer, authorities are ramping up hazard reduction burns to prepare for what could be a challenging fire season.
