Emergency services were called to the highway about 6.30pm on Friday following reports a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle about 1km south of Bredbo.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the woman at the scene, but she could not be saved.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 60s, is yet to be formally identified.

The driver, a 54-year-old man, was not injured. He was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established and officers from Monaro Police District have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area, with local traffic diversions in place.
