The death of Presley Gerber, the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford, is being investigated by police as a “suspected overdose”.
The 27-year-old was found dead at a rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles after officers from the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) received a report about 9.35am on Sunday, local time.
“SMPD detectives are investigating the death as a suspected overdose,” police said.
“At this time, there is no indication of foul play.”
An examination was completed on Monday by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner but was inconclusive.
“The cause and manner of death have been deferred, which means additional testing and/or studies were requested in order to make a determination,” the examiner said in a statement.
“Due to the ongoing death investigation, the DME cannot disclose what testing and/or studies were requested.”
The investigation continues while Presley’s family — mother Cindy Crawford, business owner father Rande Gerber and sister Kaia Gerber — have asked for “privacy during this very difficult and painful time”.
Presley had opened up about his mental health and addiction issues in recent years, documenting his attempts to not only better himself but others.
Both he and his siter followed in their mother’s footsteps and began modelling as teenagers, featuring in campaigns for fashion labels such as Dolce & Gabbana.
Presley said he started suffering from “panic attacks” and was self-medicating with prescription medication Xanax and Valium.
He was arrested in 2019 for driving under the influence and was sentenced to three years of probation and to complete a driver’s program.
Presley had previously described his battle to overcome his mental health issues as a “24/7 job” but wanted to be an example for others facing similar issues.
“Having struggled with mental health, depression and some other things that come along with that,” he told the Studio 22 podcast in 2023.
“that whether I help one person or a hundred people get out of that place that I was in at one point in my life, that’s all I need to do.
“That’s really what I want to do, help people.”
That approach led to him sharing “Mental Health Mondays” videos to Instagram, in which he talked about being in recovery circles and trying to return to healthy habits.
He said he was proud of how much he’d been able to help others with the series.
“When I started Mental Health Mondays, the goal was to spark real conversations about the stuff most people hide,” he said in a post in November.
“It’s been incredible seeing how far that message has spread and how many people it’s helped.”
One of his last posts to Instagram featured him at a Los Angeles rehabilitation facility undergoing psychedelic drug treatment in March.
“[A] quiet moment before everything changed,” he captioned the post.
“I was terrified, and I knew I would be again if I ever had to face something like this.
“Praying it’s the last time I have to come back.”
Both Crawford and Kaia commented on the post, supporting Presley throughout the process.
“You are a warrior! Walked thru the fire to find yourself! So proud,” Crawford wrote.
Kaia added: “That’s my brother I am so damn proud.”
Kaia earlier this year spoke about how much her brother’s decade-long addiction had impacted the family.
“When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,” Kaia told Vogue.
“I think that’s also why I started to self-identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.”
